BRANDON LANDERS
FRIEZE LA
Booth F1
Santa Monica Airport
February 20 - February 23, 2025
For Frieze Los Angeles 2025, Carlye Packer is pleased to present a solo booth of works by Brandon Landers.
The paintings of Los Angeles-based artist Brandon D. Landers (b. 1985, Los Angeles, CA) are composed of irregular surfaces, applied thickly and shaped with a palette knife. His subjects are a mix of portraits, gatherings, and quotidian scenes, some pulled from his imagination, others from memories of his childhood and family life in South Central Los Angeles. Through his prolific body of work, Landers has articulated a distinct vocabulary: rooms that seem to defy the rules of perspective, human proportions that are often distorted, and characters showcasing monstrously toothy grins. Advertising and brands are occasionally featured in his images, but the text in the paintings is consistently drawn backwards— mirrored— stressing the alternative reality of his compositions. Cues, codes, and plays with language are peppered throughout the works (for example, outlets make an incongruous cameo in the paintings as a response to the colloquialism “Are you plugged in?”—to which he answers, “I’m the outlet”).
Landers’s work is included in the public collections of the Perez Art Museum, Miami, FL; the Rubell Family Collection, Miami, FL; the Hammer Museum, Los Angeles, CA; and the Bunker, Palm Beach, FL. His most recent body of work was exhibited as part of the Hammer’s Made in LA (2021), where he showed six large scale paintings. Frieze LA is the first large scale public presentation of his works since his breakout Hammer exhibition. Carlye Packer has worked with Brandon Landers since 2017.
